About This Site
The Septuagint Research Library presents the Greek Old Testament in Swete's edition with Brenton's English translation alongside, plus the Letter of Aristeas in full and a corpus lexicon built from the uploaded text itself.
Editorial principles
- Real data only. Every reading, parse, gloss, and attestation comes from a named source. Nothing is invented to fill a gap.
- Verified parses only. A word popup shows a lemma, parse, and gloss only where the form is verified; otherwise it says plainly that no verified parse exists yet. Morphology is progressive.
- Each side keeps its own numbering. Greek and English versification differ in many books. Differences are marked in the book's notes, never renumbered or harmonised.
- Gaps are shown, not hidden. Where a passage is absent from the sources, a gap marker says so.
- Licenses respected. The Greek transcription is CC BY-SA 4.0 (see Sources); Brenton's English is public domain. No CATSS or STEPBible data is used, and no published lexicon text is copied.
- No overclaiming. No “coined by the Septuagint” or “earliest known attestation” claims are made without LSJ and papyri checks, which have not been run.
Versification
Greek and English chapter and verse numbers often differ — sometimes by a whole chapter (Joel: Greek 3 chapters, Brenton 4; Malachi: Greek 4, Brenton 3), sometimes by rearrangement (Proverbs, Esther's Additions, Jeremiah's oracles against the nations). The reader pairs verses by number within each chapter and shows each side's own numbering; the per-book notes on every reader page list the chapters where the counts differ, and the Sources page documents the larger mappings. Nothing is renumbered to force alignment.
